Texas Personal Income Tax
Texas is one of seven states that has no state income tax.
Retail State Tax
The Texas State sales and use tax rate is 6.25%, but local taxing jurisdictions (cities, counties, special purpose districts, and transit authorities) may also impose sales and use tax up to 2% for a total maximum combined rate of 8.25%. The current retail taxes for Sugar Land is 8.25%.
Residential Property Tax
Fort Bend County has a range of tax rates from 2.8 to 3.8. Tax rates will differ depending on the Municipal Utility District (MUD) and Levee Improvement District (LID) that the subject property is zoned for.
Residence Homestead - If the property is your principal residence, you may qualify for a homestead exemption. The city offers a 1 percent exemption (minimum $5,000.00).
Disabled - If you qualify for a residence homestead exemption, you may also qualify for an addional exemption of $67,727 if you are disabled.
Disabled Veteran - Exemptions from $5,000.00 to $12,000.00 for veterans, with exemptions from $2,500.00 to $5,000.00 for a spouse and children of a member of the armed services who dies while on active duty.
Over 65 - If you qualify for a residence homestead exemption, you may also qualify for an additional exemption of $67,727. You may not receive both a disability and over 65 exemption.
Personal Property Tax
Personal property of individuals is not taxed in Texas .
The fee for registering a vehicle to obtain a license plate is $175.00. The vehicle must be inspected and certificate presented along with proof of insurance. Residents have 30 days from gainful employment or permanent residency to transfer the registration.
Does not apply unless for Crude Oil/Natural Gas and Sulfur industries.
