Stafford Municipal School District

Created out of a 181-square-mile area of two school districts, Stafford Municipal School District was formed by a grass-roots community that believed in a small-school environment for its children. The elementary school opened in 1982 to the district's first 547 students in a leased warehouse. Student enrollment is currently just above 3,000 and the complex is the site of all five campuses. In the 2003-04 school year, SMSD, which is the only municipal school district in Texas, adopted a policy to allow limited open enrollment.

SMSD is an Academically Acceptable midsize public school district, fully accredited by the Texas Education Agency, and is subject to all subject state and federal provisions as are independent school districts. The district benefits in being a municipal school system through the availability of Stafford city partnerships such as swimming lessons for second-and fourth-graders, as well as the utilization of the Stafford Centre, which provides a more formal atmosphere for students functions.
