Katy Independent School District

With a projected enrollment of more than 47,000 students in an expanding region that exemplifies progress, the Katy Independent School District emcompasses 181 square miles in the greater Katy area, reaching into Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties.

Located west of Houston off of Interstate 10, Katy has gone from a small railroad town to a bustling community with a personality of its own. The suburban town is known for its family-friendly quality of life, which includes the much-touted school district. For the 14th year in a row, Katy ISD was named one of nation's most sought-after school districts by School Match, a nationwide school information service.

Katy ISD has 42 schools, six of which are high schools. In an area that's experiencing tremendous growth, voters approved a $315 million bond election during the 2002-03 school year to provide funds for new schools, additions and improvements at existing campuses, technology, land, buses and portable buildings. Officials from Katy ISD, the city of Katy and the Katy Development Authority recently opened the new Leonard E. Merrell Center, a 145,000-square foot multi-purpose arena, which hosts a variety of events including sports, fine arts, meetings conventions and graduation ceremonies.
